The meaning of Umrah
Umrah is shorter than Hajj, but its meaning is immense. The pilgrim enters ihram, travels to the Haram, performs tawaf, walks between Safa and Marwah, and then exits ihram by shaving or trimming the hair.
"Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous Umrah." Sahih al-Bukhari 1773
Intention and ihram
At the miqat, make intention for Umrah in the heart and enter ihram. Recite the talbiyah often, avoid the restrictions of ihram, and keep the tongue busy with dhikr and du'a.
How to perform Umrah
History and heritage
Umrah connects the pilgrim to the legacy of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام and the mercy shown to Hajar عليها السلام. It also reminds us of the Prophet ﷺ, who taught the rites and made pilgrimage a path of humility and obedience.
Practical guidance
Choose quieter times where possible, wear comfortable footwear outside the Haram, keep your hotel card and group contact with you, and avoid overloading the first day. A rested pilgrim worships with better focus.
